      Vanaf 1936 begon de administratie van de sociale zekerheid een register bij te houden van elke persoon die een socialezekerheidsnummer aanvroeg. De vroegste vorm van deze administratie stond bekend als de "Master Files of the Social Security (SSN) Holders and SSN Applications". Dit werd in de volksmond ook wel aangeduid met de term "Enumeratiesysteem". In de jaren zeventig werden legacy records uit dit systeem gemigreerd en werden nieuwe records elektronisch bijgehouden in het Numerical Identification System (NUMIDENT).


      Deze collectie bevat gegevens over personen die tussen 1936 en 2007 zijn overleden of die op 31 december 2007 meer dan 110 jaar oud zouden zijn geweest. Er zijn drie soorten vermeldingen in NUMIDENT: aanvragen (SS-5), claims en overlijdensberichten. De dossiers van de aanvragen en claims worden hier in deze collectie gepresenteerd. De overlijdensberichten zijn beschikbaar op MyHeritage via de V.S. Social Security Death Index (SSDI).


      De aanvraag (SS-5) bevat informatie uit het SS-5 formulier "Aanvraag voor een sociale zekerheidskaart" of "Aanvraag voor een sociaal zekerheidsrekeningnummer". De gegevens in de NUMIDENT aanvragen omvatten de volledige naam van de aanvrager, de naam van de vader, de meisjesnaam van de moeder, het geslacht, de ras/etnische beschrijving, de geboorteplaats en andere informatie over de aanvraag en latere wijzigingen in het dossier van de aanvrager - zoals naamsveranderingen die vooral gebruikelijk (en zelfs verplicht) zijn bij een vrouw die trouwt. Voor ongeveer 43 procent van de sociale zekerheidsnummers zijn er meerdere aanvraagdossiers.


      De aanvraagdossiers die door de administratie van de sociale zekerheid worden bewaard, omvatten niet alle aanvragen voor sociale zekerheid tussen 1936 en 2007. De gegevens van de aanvragen van vóór 1973 kunnen onvolledig zijn. Het is mogelijk dat zowel in de aanvraagdossiers als in de overlijdensberichten geen record voor een persoon staat en dat er in de aanvraagdossiers bijna 6 miljoen sociale zekerheidsnummers staan die niet in de overlijdensberichten voorkomen. En omgekeerd zijn er records in de overlijdensregistraties die geen corresponderend record in de aanvraagregistraties hebben.


      De claim dossiers bevatten informatie over het type claim, de volledige naam van de eiser, de geboortedatum, het geslacht en voor ongeveer de helft van de claims de Amerikaanse staat of het land van geboorte. Voor een klein aantal sociale zekerheidsnummers zijn er meerdere declaraties.


      De gegevens in deze verzameling kunnen plaatsnamen hebben die zijn afgekort of persoonsnamen die zijn afgekapt in de gegevens die door de Sociale Zekerheidadministratie zijn verstrekt. MyHeritage heeft veel hiervan waar mogelijk gecorrigeerd en uitgebreid, maar andere waarden blijven verkort of afgekort.
