Herman Kouwenhoven, destijds dienstplichtig militair, wist bij de inval van Japan in Ned. Indië met een Engels schip naar Zuid Afrika te ontsnappen. Hij is daar werkzaam geweest in de koeltechniek. Na de oorlog is hij nog in Nieuw Guinea en in Indonesië geweest, daarna weer naar Zuid Afrika en tenslotte naar Namibië vertrokken.
