Notes about Jan Johannes van der Zwaag

Reeds vele jaren kwam Jan op voor de belangen der werkende bevolking, als lid der C.P.N. afd. Velsen. Hij schaarde zich in de rijen van de „Waarheid'-groep welke toentertijd „De Vonk" verspreidde. Door zijn scherpe blik en organisatorische kwaliteiten werd hij al spoedig, in dat gebied, tot functionaris
benoemd.


In deze functie ontplooide Jan een grote en veelzijdige activiteit bij uitbreiding van het lezerstal der krant, en het ondersteuningsfonds tot hulp aan de slachtoffers van het fascisme. De Duitse politie deed alle moeite hem te arresteren. Doch op 17 mei 1943 werd hij bij de Velser pont door de S. D. gearresteerd en opgesloten in de koepelgevangenis in Haarlem. Het bleek dat ze 14 dagen op Jan hadden zitten wachten in gezelschap van een verrader, welke hem kende. In de gevangenis Weteringschans werd hij vreselijk mishandeld doch geen woord van verraad kwam over zijn lippen.


Na maandenlang in de gevangenis en de hel van Vught te zijn opgesloten geweest, werd Jan, met nog enige strijders, door het Duitse gerechtshof ter dood veroordeeld. In het gezicht van de dood, zei hij tot zijn vrouw: „;Miljoenen geven hun leven voor de grote zaak voor vrijheid en gerechtigheid; ook ik ben bereid dit offer te brengen". Uit deze woorden bleek de grootheid van Jan van der Zwaag. Ongebroken ging Jan de dood tegemoet.


Op 20 mei 1944 werd hij op de Waalsdorpervlakte gefusilleerd.
