In maart 1943 kwamen de artsen in het verzet tegen de Duitse overheid. Zij deden afstand van hun bevoegdheid. Dit
voorbeeld van de doktoren gaf de bevolking grote moed en in april kwam er een geweldige staking.De april/meistaking van 1943 in de gemeente ontstond na de aankondiging van generaal Christiansen dat alle officieren en manschappen van leger en vloot zich voor krijgsgevangenschap moesten melden. Van 30 april tot ongeveer 3 of 4 mei werd in verschillende bedrijven in deze gemeente niet gewerkt.
De zuivelfabrieken kregen weinig of geen melk aangevoerd (de melkstaking). Want de melkrijders bleven thuis en als er toch boeren waren die melk bij de weg zetten, werden de melkbussen omgesmeten. De auto’s van de Ned. Thermochemische fabriek te Sumar zijn een paar dagen niet uitgereden uit vrees voor molestatie.
De bezetter stelde het standrecht in onmiddellijk nadat de eerste stakingen waren uitgebroken. In Tytsjerksteradiel lieten enige mensen het leven door het agressief optreden van de Duitsers. Op 3 mei 1943 werden de Noardburgumers Fokke Polet en Jonas Elzinga op de hoek Zomerweg/Kloosterlaan van hun fiets geschoten.
Op diezelfde dag werd ook in Burgum geschoten. Dit gebeurde door Duitsers die door Friesland reisden per auto om de staking de kop in te drukken. Op die zelfde dag werd ook in Burgum door deze Duitsers geschoten. Hierbij werd de vrouw S. Beukenkamp door een ricocherende kogel in haar huis getroffen.
Na een ernstige ziekte herstelde zij niet meer geheel en overleed later. Na dit voorval reed op 4 mei 1943 een Duitse overvalwagen naar de boerderij van Freerk Wijma en de inzittenden omsingelde het erf. Wijma werd gevraagd of hij die morgen melk aan de fabriek had geleverd. Wijma antwoordde ontkennend en verklaarde de avondmelk wel te zullen leveren. Toen Wijma weigerde mee te gaan naar Leeuwarden, gaf de commandant het bevel om de jonge boer neer te schieten. De volgende dag werd de melkstaking in Sumar beëindigd. In de vroege morgen van 6 mei werd Wijma in alle stilte in het dorp begraven.
