Een korte, gezette gestalte, een forse, diepe stem, waarmee hij vele malen gedichten en proza voordroeg: gevoelig en
romantisch: dat was Luit van der Wey.


Op zijn transportfiets, waarmee hij de klanten van zijn klein kruideniersbedrijf langsging om de onvoldoende baten van zijn kosterschap aan te vullen, droomde en dacht hij. Deze man kon diep blij zijn en zijn eveneens diep-pessimistische buien verdreef hij altijd met de woorden: „Kop op, jongens, 't is oorlog!".


Was hij niet rijk in zijn vriendschap en was het geen lust om met hem te praten? De humor tintelde altijd door zijn woorden, ze sprak uit zijn ogen en klonk door in zijn stem. Lachen kon hij, gul en smakelijk lachen, maar ergens in die lach was altijd een serieuze toon. Hij bewees,
dat het christelijk geloof een ruime, ja de ruimste en de echte Vrolijkheid kon geven.


Is het wonder, dat God hem in de bezettingstijd een taak gaf, die hij zou moeten volbrengen tot een onherroepelijk einde. Maar om het uitzicht op zulk een einde heeft hij zich niet aan die taak onttrokken. Toen in october 1943 door een arrestatie het kantoor van Mr de Graaf niet meer veilig was en het contactpunt werd verlegd naar de Westerkerk in het Soesterkwartier, waarvan Luit van der Wey koster was, hebben velen in het kostersgezin, waar zijn vrouw hem in alle moeilijkheden terzijde stond, een gastvrij tehuis gevonden.


Hetzelfde verraad, dat zijn vriend De Graaf deed arresteren, werd ook hem noodlottig. Op 2 juni 1944 werd hij in zijn woning, waar zovelen hem hadden leren kennen en waarderen, door de SD opgepakt en naar de Gansstraat in Utrecht vervoerd. Zijn lijdensweg is zeer lang geweest en
heeft hem gebracht in de verschrikkingen van verschillende kampen, zoals Vught, Sachsenhausen en Bergen-Belsen.


Zij, die hem in zijn gevangenschap hebben meegemaakt, getuigen van zijn rotsvast geloof en de steun, die hij voor
velen in die buitengewoon zware omstandigheden is geweest. De vijand mocht zijn illegale activiteit stopgezet hebben, aan het blij getuigen van zijn geloof was geen einde.


Luitzen van der Wey, die als leider van het LO-district Amersfoort vooraan stond in de strijd tegen een overmachtige vijand, bleef als christen op zijn post tot God hem op 18 maart 1945 tot zich nam. Hij overleed door uitputting te Fargen, een Duitse marinebasis aan de Weser.
