Woonde in Opeinde (gemeente Smallingerland). Zoon van Reinder de Vries (landbouwer) en
Antje Bruining. Ongehuwd. Boer. Gereformeerd. Lid verzet behorende bij de KP-Drachten. De afgelegen boerderij van de familie De Vries op Legauke onder Opeinde huisvestte in de oorlog onderduikers en KP'ers. Zoon Folkert de Vries herinnert zich in de Leeuwarder Courant: ,,Wy wiene in trochgongadres. Om de safolle tiid kaam der wer in boat foar de wâ;l mei in protsje minsken dy't plak ha moasten. Der wiene altyd wol flechtelingen en ûnderdûkers by ús yn 'e hûs.'' (Wij waren een doorgangsadres. Om de zoveel tijd kwam er weer een boot aan wal met een groepje mensen die onderdak moesten hebben. Er waren altijd wel vluchtelingen en onderduikers bij ons in huis.). Op 21 november 1944 deed een vijftal Duitse militairen van de Zoll (Grenzschutz) uit Drachten in alle vroegte een overval op de boerderij. De broers Jan en Marten waren aan het melken, toen vier Duitsers de stal binnendrongen. De broers repten zich met tramstaker Gerardus Wagenaar (28 december 1907 Drogeham), die op de boerderij was ondergedoken, naar het voorhuis. ,,Dútsers, ferried'', riepen ze om de nog slapende KP'ers te waarschuwen. De militairen schoten de beide broers en Wagenaar dood. Een tweede tramstaker had zich snel weten te verstoppen. De schietpartij kostte ook het leven aan de commandant van de Duitsers. Zijn ondergeschikten voelden zich door de KP'ers zozeer belaagd dat ze het hazenpad kozen. Later keerden de Duitsers in veel grotere getale terug. De bewoners waren inmiddels gevlucht. De bezetters namen het vee en verder alles wat van waarde was mee en staken de boerderij in brand. De boerderij, De Oerwinning, is in 1948 herbouwd. Op het graf van Jan en Marten de Vries staat de toorts van de Stichting Friesland 1940-1945, terwijl hun namen op monumenten in Opeinde
en in het Van Haersmapark in Drachten staan. De Reinder de Vriessingel in Opeinde is naar hun vader vernoemd.
