‘Vader van Europa’, zo noemde een tijdgenoot hem. In de halve eeuw dat Karel de Grote de scepter zwaaide, wist hij een groot deel van Europa onder zijn heerschappij te krijgen. Toch werd zijn bestuur niet zozeer gekenmerkt door militaire overheersing. Karel de Grote had een hoger doel voor ogen: één christelijke identiteit voor alle volkeren onder zijn bewind. Om dat te bereiken ontwierp hij een uitgekiend communicatienetwerk. Portret van een even orthodox als vooruitstrevend heerser.
