Begin 19e eeuw had de vader van Elte Martens Beima (1801-1873) in het pand een bakkerij. Beima was op de lagere school al een knappe kop. Na zijn schooltijd kwam bij zijn vader in de bakkerij, maar bleef ook bezig met vooral wis- en sterrenkunde. Eerst de dominee van Oostermeer en later de toenmalige gouverneur van Friesland namen hem onder hun hoede; de laatste bood aan hem op zijn kosten wis- en natuurkunde te laten studeren. In 1824 begon hij zijn studie in Leiden, waar hij in 1842 promoveerde. Hij werd geen hoogleraar, maar conservator mineralogie en geologie van ’s Rijks Museum van Natuurlijke Historiën (nu Naturalis) in Leiden. (ongehuwd)
