Mijn moeder was lichamelijk geen sterke vrouw, maar geestelijk was zij niet kapot te krijgen. Ons gezin was gereformeerd. Zij had een groot vertrouwen in haar geloof, dat bleek vooral in de hongerwinter, want iedere keer als er geen eten was, zei zij steevast: "de Here zorgt wel voor ons" en altijd kwam er dan wel weer iets op tafel.
Zij had het met haar grote gezin erg druk en had weinig of geen tijd voor ontspanning buiten het gezin. Toen zij eens lid werd van een zangkoor, werd zij door de kinderen daar danig mee geplaagd. Vooral met "Komt nu met zang....." werd door ons vaak gebruikt om haar te plagen. Ze was maar heel kort lid, zij kon het niet bolwerken. In 1947 werd zij ziek en kwam thuis in bed te liggen. Haar slaapkamer was in de voorkamer. Als zij zich druk maakte over de herrie, die de kinderen maakten, dan stikte ze bijna van benauwdheid. Het bleek natte pleuritus te zijn. Kort nadat zij in het ziekenhuis was opgenomen, overleed zij op 9 januari 1948.35 jaar25 jaarIn een van de poëziealbums van haar dochters schreef moeder het volgende gedicht:Hier achter volgen vele wensen
Van grote, kleine en lieve mensen
De een wenst je dit, de ander dat
