Hij schreef veel voor de krant over de geschiedenis van Lemmer en de visserij in het bijzonder. Hij bestreed dat er alleen maar armoede was en vertelde o.a. dat zijn ouders met hun vrienden Jacob Visser en zijn vrouw Klaske (in 1907 getrouwd) een vakantiereis naar Amsterdam maakten (in 1907?) Tante Margje (1893) paste vaak op Jan en Sake.Jan was later sluiswachter in Medemblik.

De broer vanJacob Visser, Wiebe, was meestal de knecht op de LE 48 van Jacob. Als Wiebe ziek was, viel Jan voor hem in.
