Priester

Hij vertrok naar het Klein Semenarie in Culemborg en het Groot Semenarie in Driebergen Rijsenburg. Jan werd priester gewijd in de Kathedraal van Utrecht en benoemd tot kapelaan in Uithuizen. Dertien jaar was hij kapelaan aan de Drieëenheidskerk in Oldenzaal. Op 26 augustus 1943 werd hij benoemd tot pastoor aan de Petrus en Pauluskerk in Hengevelde. Hij kreeg opdracht een nieuwe kerk te bouwen, omdat tijdens de oorlog de oude kerk was verwoest.
