Ik heb haar gekend als Opoe Stip.
Men noemde haar Maartje Stip, naar haar mans naam, van Stipriaan. Zij was de dochter van Klaas Wit en Meinouwtje Stam, 91-VI. Een klein, pittig vrouwtje met een zeer goed geheugen. Daarbij een voor Bert extra voordeel, haar vader was erg laat getrouwd, er werden door hem zeer oude verhalen verteld en er was nogal wat bewaard gebleven.
Zo kreeg ik van haar oude brieven en een blaadje uit een bijbel welke had toebehoord aan Geertje Rezelman, later aan Lijsbeth de Beurs en ik vond hem later terug bij Aafje Hoogvorst in Utrecht.
Het was een zeer fraai exemplaar, waarin de namen van de ouders van Geert je Rezelman waren gegrift, daar doorheen de namen van Klaas Wit en zijn vrouw. Van de inhoud was slechts dit ene blaadje bewaard gebleven, waarschijnlijk om de gegevens er op vermeld. Zij betreffen dopen en overlijden van familieleden uit die tijd, en zijn niet altijd correct. Maar vooral de laatste en moeilijkst te lezen mededeling had mijn bijzondere interesse. Er bleek uit dat Pieter had deelgenomen aan de tiendaagse veld tocht gedurende de Belgische opstand. Witten hebben zelden aan militaire activiteiten deelgenomen, zij werden meestal vrijgeloot of wisten aan te tonen dat zij een gebrek hadden, waardoor zij vrijgesteld werden. Hier echter was er een die dat kennelijk niet gelukt was.

Er staat:
Anno 1830 den 28 November is Pieter Klaasz. Wit in den Heere Gerust (te) Utrecht int Rijkshospitaal. Aan een blessure dwars door de knie gekregen te Antwerpen bij de zeemengelpoort.
Bij controle van de B. S. in Utrecht bleek dat juist te zijn, jammer dat er geen verdere gegevens over waren.
Er hebben vele mannen aan die veldtocht deelgenomen en hoewel ik schreef dat er niet zoveel Witten aan militaire zaken hebben meegedaan was het bij deze tocht raak. Iets verder vind U het militair paspoort van Cornelis Wit, die een metalen kruis kreeg en een medaille voor de citadel van Antwerpen. Ook mijn overgrootvader kreeg hem en deze is thans in het bezit van Rudolf Wit, 334-IX
