Notes about François Thierens

Konstabelsmaat bij de VOC op de reis met de Scholtenburg in 1764,
. Konstabelsmaat, hulpje van de konstabel, of in oude spelling konstapel of constapel, droeg zorg voor geschut en munitie. Als de kanonnen niet gebruikt werden moesten hij zorgen dat ze stevig vastgebonden waren en niet tijdens een storm konden gaan rollen. Hij moest om de week vier à vijf keer het kruid keren en de vaten heen en weer rollen om te voorkomen dat het kruid ging klonteren. Hij was ook verantwoordelijk voor de handwapens aan boord, zoals kardoesen, lepels, wissers, handgranaten, vuir, stinkpotten, musketten, roers, pistolen en degens.
De konstabel had een of meer konstabelsmaten en vijf of zes busschieters onder zich

Hij ging in dienst der V.O.I.C. naar Oost-Indië, werd onderkoopman, 13 Febr. 1776 secretaris en 26 Juli 1784 fiscaal en opperkoopman van Malakka.
Hij huwde op Sumatra's Westkust, 15 Maart 1771, Helena Elisabeth Boudewijns, op S.W. overl. 27 April 1774, dochter van Jan B, opperkoopman van Tadang, en van Helena Alberts. Daarna hertrouwde hij te Batavia 12 Mei 1776 met Geertruida Frederica Houtman, overl. te Malakka 4 Febr. 1796, dochter van Matthijs en van Catharina Thysen. Uit het eerste huwelijk 2, uit het tweede 8 kinderen.
