Notes about Adolff Adriaensz Croeser

De geportretteerden op het topstuk Een burgemeester van Delft en zijn dochter (1655) van Jan Steen, dat het Rijksmuseum in 2004 verwierf, blijkt deze Adolff te zijn met zijn dochter Catharina
Identificatie als Briell van Welhoeck door C. Hofstede de Groot
(zonder enige argumentatie); identificatie van Adolf Croeser en zijn dochter Catharina door F. Grijzenhout en N. van Sas. Zie: NRC, 21-12-2006, pp. 1 en 9, met afb. in kleur.

Herkomst: aankoop Rijskmuseum 2004 uit de erven van Lady Douglas Pennant

Beschrijving: man zittend op stoep van huis aan de Oude Delft te Delft. Frontaal, gelaat en blik naar rechts. Zwarte hoed, platte witte kraag met akertjes, brief in linkerhand. Linksvoor: meisje, staande, iets naar links. Blond haar, rabatkraag, gesloten waaier in linkerhand. Rechts een bedelende oude vrouw en jongetje. Op de achtergrond een brug met man en toren van de Oude Kerk.
Grijzenhout en Van Sas ontdekten dat Jan Steen meestal mensen uit zijn eigen omgeving als model gebruikte voor zijn schilderijen. Uit het onderzoek is nu gebleken dat maar één persoon in aanmerking komt als model voor het schilderij: de korenhandelaar Adolf Croeser (ca. 1612-1668). Adolf Croeser woonde schuin tegenover Steen aan de Oude Delft en kreeg vijf kinderen bij zijn eerste vrouw, waarvan alleen het meisje Catharina overleefde. Zij werd op 13 juli 1642 gedoopt in de Oude Kerk van Delft, de kerk die in de achtergrond van het schilderij te zien is. In 1655, het jaar dat Jan Steen het schilderij vervaardigde, werd zij dus dertien jaar, wat goed kan kloppen met de leeftijd van het meisje op het schilderij.
