    Dat was de bedoeling niet
    Jacob Boonstoppel was gehuwd met Adriaantje Verheul. Het echtpaar
    woonde op Alblasserdam. Jacob werd in 1795 door zijn vrouw betrapt op
    overspel. Zij klaagde haar man aan, en het werd een zaak voor de hoge
    vierschaar van Zuid-Holland. Op 10 Mei 1795 werd hij wegens overspel
    voor enkele jaren uit het district verbannen. Maar ja, in Januari 1797 bleek hij zich toch weer op het dorp op te houden. Dat mocht niet, hij was immers verbannen. Zodat hij vanwege “het overtreden van zijn bannissement” op 20 Januari 1797 voorgoed uit het district werd
    verbannen.
    Hierop richtte zijn vrouw, Adriaantje Verheul, zich met een verzoek tot het Hof van Holland in Den Haag. Zij verzocht of zowel het vonnis van 10 mei 1795 als dat van 20 Januari 1797 tenietgedaan konden worden. Zij had hem zijn overspel vergeven.

    Nou, dát mocht. Op 18 September 1797 besloot de hoge vierschaar het
    vonnis van 10 Mei 1795 nietig te verklaren.
    Waarschijnlijk was die verbanning nooit de bedoeling geweest van de
    jaloerse Adriaantje. Immers, op die manier was zij, omdat ze in
    Alblasserdam bleef wonen, een onbestorven weduwe. Over een
    echtscheiding lees ik niets. Waarschijnlijk was haar echtgenoot weer
    door haar gevraagd terug te komen in het echtelijk bed, hoewel hij dan het risico zou lopen aangehouden te worden.
