      Henk en Bets woonden eerst bij mijn ouders in, in de achterkamer op de Gooiersgracht 143, ik weet nog dat babytje Roeland daar ook lag.

      Uiteindelijk konden ze zelfstandig wonen op een boven wonig (kamer/keulen) op de hoek van de Lingeskamp/Jagersweg.

      Daar vandaan verhuisde ze naar een zelfstandige woning Remiseweg nr. 2. Mijn jeugdherinering aan dat huis was dat er altijd muziekinstrumenten stonden, zoals een viool, een banjo en ooit zelfs een piano en niemand kon die instrumenten bespelen.

      Na de slag om Arnhem lag de stad in puin. De puinhpoen en goederen moesten geruimd worden en daarvoor schakelde de Duitsers verplichte arbeid in zoals ook vanuit het Gooi. Onze vader (Roelof Hermanus Willard hoorde daar ook bij. Hij is daar ziek geworden (nieren) maar mocht pas terug naar Laren als hij voor een vervanger zorgde en dat was zijn oudste zoon Henk.

      Deze verplichte periode heeft Henk zijn verdere leven beinvloed, voor zijn omgeving een sombere en bijna norse man. De laatste jaren van zijn leven was hij aanspreekbaar als je over zijn paardjes begon, dan zag je soms een glimlach.
