Rede bij de overdracht van het rectoraat aan de Vrije Universiteit op 20 October 1899 gehouden

In 1880 werden door den Rector ingeschreven 16 studenten; in 1881 was het 15; in 1882 was het 11; in 1883 was het 15; in 1884 was het 9; in 1885 was het 7; in 1886 was het 20; in 1887 was het 12; in 1888 was het 18; in 1889 was het 13; in 1890 was het 17; in 1891 was het 22; in 1892 was het 13; in 1893 was het 5; in 1894 was het 22; in 1895 was het 20; in 1896 was het 18; in 1897 was het 7; en nu in 1898/99 was het 14. Na aftrek van het cijfer dergenen die de Vrije Universiteit verlieten is thans het getal studenten 128, als 75 voor de Theologie, 2 voor de Theologie en Rechten, 4 voor de Theologie en Letteren, 22 voor de Rechten en 25 voor de Letteren.

Er hadden dit jaar drie promotiën plaats, en wel 1º. op 3 Maart 1899 van den heer Ds. P. Jansz. Wijmenga in de Godgeleerdheid, na verdediging van zijn specimen Festus Hommius; 2º. op 10 Juni 1899 van den heer T. de Vries in de Rechtsgeleerdheid na verdediging van zijn proefschrift over Overheid en Zondagsviering, en 3º. op 23 juni 1899 van den heer Ds. A. Kuyper jr. na verdediging van zijn dissertatie over Johannes Maccovius.

Examens werden met goed gevolg afgelegd in de Theologische faculteit 4 voor den graad van Candidaat; in de Rechtsgeleerde faculteit 2 voor den |52| graad van Candidaat; en in de Letterkundige faculteit 3 Candidaatsexamens, 8 propaedeutische voor de Theologie, en 3 propaedeutische voor de Rechten.
