    Aukje werd op 19 mei 1909 geboren als jongste kind van Klaas Westra en Hiltje Fokkema, aan het Vliet in Franeker. Haar vader was timmerman en molenmaker. Hij bouwde een boerderij aan de Harlingerweg en ging daar met zijn gezin wonen. Aukje bleef lang thuis wonen om haar ouders te helpen, tot ze op 2 juni 1931 trouwde met Joris van der Ploeg, die boer werd in Schalsum.
    Op de boerderij wist Aukje wel van aanpakken. Ook in haar gezin was het alle zeilen bijzetten, want uit het huwelijk kwamen maar liefst zeven kinderen. Aukje was heel gastvrij, er waren vaak logés. In de oorlog namen Aukje en Joris evacués in huis, een gezin uit Arnhem. Nog tot jaren na de oorlog bleven ze elkaar zien.
    Tot 1987 bleven ze op de boerderij wonen, maar toen hun zoon Klaas trouwde gingen Aukje en Joris wonen in de Cammingastraat in Franeker. Er kwamen 26 kleinkinderen, en er zijn inmiddels zelfs 33 achterkleinkinderen.
    In 1998 overleed Joris. Na enige tijd verhuisde Aukje naar Verzorgingshuis Saxenoord, waar ze met veel plezier woont. Ze is redelijk gezond en nog helder van geest, kan overal over meepraten en weet zelfs alle telefoonnummers van de familie uit het hoofd. Toch wel bijzonder voor een honderdjarige!
