De Huninga's danken hun naam hoogstwaarschijnlijk aan hun afkomst uit Huningen bij Bazel, toen in de 14de eeuw Upko met een Juffer Hunens in Oostfriesland trouwde en zijn nageslacht vervolgens in het Oldambt terecht kwam. In elk geval is er in 1391 een Hemmo Huninga als Hoofdeling betrokken bij een grensscheiding met Reinderland. Het wapen van de Huninga's is blauw met een roodgetongde zilveren leeuw. Het helmteken is en uitkomende leeuw. Door zijn huwelijk werd hij Heer van Uckoborg.
