De oorsprong van de familie Tilbusscher ligt in Duitsland en wel in het vorstendom Lippe bij Detmold. In de achttiende en negentiende eeuw trokken veel mensen vanuit Duitsland naar Nederland om er als seizoenarbeider te werken, vooral in Groningen n Friesland. Ze verdienden de kost met het maaien van gras of het verkopen van in de winter geweven stoffen.

Frederik Tilbusscher was ook zo'n wever en hij kreeg in Groningen een relatie met Trijntje Coenraads met wie hij in 1828 trouwde. Ze kregen tien kinderen.
