Het echtpaar vertrok met hun kinderen op 24-07-1820 vanuit Eenrum naar Frederiksoord (Kolonie van Weldadigheid).De plaatsing gebeurde met "contributie van het arrondissement Appingedam". Volgens een brief van de subcommissie Appingedam d.d.12 Juni 1820 zijn zij uitgeloot samen met een familie H.J.Taatgen uit Farmsum uit een totaal van 9 belangstellende gezinnen. Maar het belangrijkste is toch wel de reactie op deze kritiek en en het feit dat die reactie komt van Bakema's echtgenote. Trijnje Jans de Jong, 49 jaar tevoren geboren in Bellingeweer, is niet van plan zich door de bemoeials te laten intimideren. 'Ik zal voor de bliksem Mijnheer Visser wel spreken,' zegt zij, verwijzend naar de koloniedirecteur die het gezin voor het vrijboerschap heeft voorgedragen. Ze uit 'niets dan brutale uitdrukkingen' volgens de twee verbalisten. 'Zoo hebben wij haar bij den arm genomen om haar de fout aan te tonen, dan genoemde vrouw heeft niet opgehouden met brutaliseeren'. Ze gaan er iets van zeggen tegen Bakema die op het land is: 'doch heeft hier op niet geantwoord'.

Ook voor de directie is het de 'alles overschreeuwende, vloekende en door en door brutale vrouw', die de doorslag geeft bij het besluit om de Bakema's het vrijboerschap te ontnemen en ze terug te plaatsen naar Frederiksoord. Maar als een aantal jaren later daar kleine hoeves worden samengevoegd ten gunste van grote boerderijen voor vrijboeren, behoren de Bakema's weer tot de eersten die tot die status bevorderd worden. Misschien dat vrouw Bakema tegen die tijd begrepen heeft dat je in dekoloniën een beetje moet 'meeveren' om iets te bereiken? (11)
