Westerman in onderbroek
Midwolda is een dorp van schaatsen. Op 31 januari 1929 werd daar een hardrijderij voor mannen gehouden ‘Een wedstrijd in oude stijl, aldus het bijschrift van de foto in N in W en B, ‘waarbij de rijders trouwhartig, gelijk men vroeger steeds deed,ook in ouderwetsch kostuum uitkwamen - of om het deftiger te zeggen: in sous pantalon…’
Met andere woorden, ze reden in lange onderbroeken.
Met het traceren van de plaats van handeling had ik aanvankelijk moeite.
Dat er in Midwolda al vele jaren werd geschaatst is bekend.
Al in 1878 werd ijsclub ‘De Dollard’ opgericht, die gebruik maakte van een ondergelopen stuk weiland tegenover de borg.
Veel later, in 1939 werd Eigen Kracht opgericht die met schaatswedstrijden enorme roem vergaarde.
Nee, de wedstrijd van hierboven is niet op de ijsbaan, maar op de brede gracht van de Ennemaborgh.
Het is de gracht langs het hertenkamp en in de verte is de voormalige boerderij van Dallinga (Boonman) te zien.
De dappere mannen staan klaar in onderbroek en op primitieve houtjes. Nog even en de rood-wit-blauwe vlag gaat naar beneden.
De andere foto is het startmoment van een Midwolder coryfee Remmert Westerman.
Westerman, die zich eveneens had ontdaan van zijn dikke stijve machester broek om in lange onderbroek meer bewegingsruimte te hebben, had al veel overwinningen op zijn naam staan. Als teken van zijn prestaties heeft de 63-jarige enkele van zijn medailles op z’n trui gespeld.
Remmert Westerman, die trouwde met Assien Stubbe, overleed in 1936 op 70 jarige leeftijd.
In de Winschoter Courant van 27 augustus wordt daar met een klein berichtje melding van gemaakt.
‘Op 70-jarige leeftijd is hier nog vrij plotseling de heer Remmert Westerman, in de geheele provincie bekend als een veteraan op de schaats. De heer W, wist vroeger en op rijperen leeftijd heel wat prijzen te winnen…’
