Jan wordt als Jaye Schonewille of Jaye Jans Schonewille vermeld in de haardstedenregisters van het Hollandsch Rot. Hij bezit een praam en betaalt in 1764 de hoge bijdrage.

Hij wordt op 10 november 1764 medemomber over de twee kinderen van wijlen Jan Hendriks Kats en zijn dochter Annigje

Aanvankelijk woonden Jaije en Geertje op de zuidkant van het Haagje. Ze werden de eerste bewoners van het Hoekje ("In het Grote Blok, op de zuidkant van het opgaande, nu ‘t Hoekje").
In 1728 werd door schulte Abraham de Vriese een meierwoning gebouwd op de plek van het huidige pand Hoekje 4. De woning werd dat jaar betrokken door Jan Harms Schonewille en zijn vrouw. Het boerderijtje mat in 1758 in totaal 4,5 gebint, met een breedte van 20 voet. Zijn schuurtje meet 2 gebint, 13 voet.

Jaije was klein vervener, met onder meer veen aan het Oostopgaande en op de Bakkersdijk. Hij deed aan boekweitenbouw, had drie koeien, een stukje bouwland en was praambezitter. Zijn woning was lang een belangrijk herkenningspunt in de velden, als laatste huis voor de turfgraverijen. Het pand werd na de dood van schulte De Vriese Jaije's eigendom. Het oude "Jaijen-huis", zoals het in de achttiende eeuw werd genoemd, werd pas in 1968 afgebroken.
