Als Jaap overlijdt, blijft Gijsje met tien kinderen achter. De eerste vijf waren al van school en hadden werk in Hilversum. Voor Gijsje was het nagenoeg onmogelijk om de eindjes aan elkaar te knopen. Toen dan ook in 1935 de gelegenheid zich voordeed om bij een weduwnaar met acht kinderen het huishouden te doen, is zij met de jongste vijf kinderen naar Erica vertrokken om bij Nijenkamp op de boerderij in te trekken. De boerderij stond wat achteraf van de doorgaande weg.

Het gezin van de Nijenkampen en de Smallenburgen was erg muzikaal. In de zomermaanden bij mooi weer zat men buiten en werd er gezongen dat het een lieve lust was. Het gezang drong ver door tot aan de bewoonde wereld. Mensen genoten hiervan en gingen er vaak speciaal voor zitten. Een van de kinderen begeleidde op de mondharmonica. Het gezamenlijke zingen was een illustratie van de saamhorigheid van het gezin; er was veel warmte, vrolijkheid en humor.

Kort na het overlijden van Gerrit Nijenkamp verhuist Gijsje in december naar Oosthuizen om op 16 juli 1954 naar Groesbeek te verhuizen. Na het overlijden van Marinus Verkade verhuist ze op 22 oktober naar Emmen om in te trekken bij haar jongste zoon Jacob Willem.
