Harmen was van 1930 tot Cd. 1965 melkventer. Zijn route liep via het Hartelaar (Teuge) - naar Wilp. Voor zijn huwelijk was hij boerenknecht bij Narres Zwart. Ook werkte hij in Borculo voor de wederopbouw tengevolge van de stormramp. Samen met zijn broer Hendrik (VII B) handelde hij in vee, boerenwagens en incidenteel in huizen.
