Lid verzet. Behoorde tot de sabotagegroep Driebergen
Gijs is op 15 februari 1945 bij zijn arrestatie door Feldgendarmerie beschoten en met een schotwond in de buik opgenomen in het ziekenhuis te Zeist (UT). Ten gevolge van deze verwonding is hij op 23 maart 1945 overleden.
Gijs is begraven op de Nieuwe Gemeentelijke Begraafplaats te Driebergen in het Erehof
De naam van Gijs staat vermeld op het verzetsmonument te Driebergen-Rijsenburg in het park 'De Wildbaan' aan de Hoofdstraat
Het monument, een ontwerp van Wim Harzing en onthuld in 1948, is opgericht ter nagedachtenis aan alle mensen die tijdens de bezettingsjaren door oorlogshandelingen zijn omgekomen. In het bijzonder worden twaalf plaatselijke verzetsmensen herdacht die in de strijd tegen de bezetter zijn gesneuveld.

De vrouwenfiguur staat symbool voor de vrijheid. Zij verbreekt de banden met het verleden en kijkt uit naar een nieuwe toekomst.
