Op 12 oktober 1917 werd de groninger Pier Eringa (1879-1962) burgemeester van Achtkarspelen en bleef dat ruim 27 jaar. Tijdens de bezettingsjaren werd hij door de bezetter uit zijn ambt ontheven op vermoeden van onwelgevallige sympathiëen. Na de oorlog is hij korte tijd opnieuw burgemeester in onze gemeente geweest. Eringa was naast zijn werk als burgemeester ook bijzonder betrokken bij het welzijn van de bevolking in de gemeente en ons dorp in het bijzonder. Hij nam een lange rij publieke vrijwillige functies op zich zoals in het Nut en het Groene Kruis. Niet zonder reden werd hij daarom geëerd met een vernoeming in een straatnaam in ons dorp: de Eringalaan. Hij overleed begin juli 1962 op 83-jarige leeftijd.
