Het gezin emigreerde in 1848 naar Amerika, Wisconsin. De zeereis werd om kosten te besparen gescheiden gedaan: de moeder en de drie kinderen reisden per passagiersschip F.G. Winchelhausen, Bastiaan reisde met een vrachtboot. Hij heeft de zeereis niet overleefd en is op zee begraven.

class="MsoNormal">Bastiaan trouwt op vrijdag 25 november 1842 te Zuid-Beijerland op 30-jarige leeftijd met de 18-jarige Aaltje Baaij, dochter van Gerrit Baaij en Pietertje (Peternella) Kok.  Aaltje is geboren op dinsdag 10 augustus 1824 te Horen, is overleden op maandag 8 juni 1908.  Aaltje werd 83 jaar, 9 maanden en 29 dagen.
