    BRON: www.joodsmonument.nl In mei 1941 is in Het Joodsche Weekblad een overlijdensadvertentie geplaatst voor dr Marcus Boas. In een korte necrologie in dezelfde weekbladeditie wordt hij een 'bekend leraar in de klassieke talen en een vooraanstaande figuur in het genootschap Amstelodamum' genoemd. Marcus Boas studeerde aan de Gemeente-Universiteit van Amsterdam. In 1903 bekroonde de Universiteit hem met een gouden penning voor de beantwoording van een prijsvraag op het terrein van de oude letteren. Hij promoveerde in Amsterdam in 1905, waarna hij zijn studies voortzette in Bonn en in Rome. Marcus Boas heeft veel gepubliceerd, met name over latijns-filologische onderwerpen. Zijn grote liefde was de geschiedenis van Amsterdam, waarover hij veel heeft geschreven. Hij deed onderzoek naar de teksten van gevelstenen en opschriften van oude huizen. Hij was lid van het Genootschap voor Joodse Wetenschap. Op zijn begrafenis zei rabbijn Coppenhagen dat Boas 'een wetenschapsman was, wars van alle oppervlakkigheid en wiens bescheidenheid een van zijn kenmerkende eigenschappen was'.
