    Door: Marcelle Zion, (JHM) Het echtpaar Hartog en Rachel Noot Cozijn kwam na de geboorte van hun oudste zoontje Mozes Philip (Mau) in 1932 vanuit de Joodse Gemeente Kampen naar Borculo. Tussen 1933 en 1941 fungeerde Hartog als chazzan (voorganger) en leraar in de kinderrijke gemeente. Het jonge gezin woonde in de "meesterswoning" naast het Cheider. Dit gebouw was opgetrokken na de cycloon in Borculo op 10 augustus 1925. Destijds waren veel gebouwen in Borculo gehavend en verwoest en met overheidsgelden is er aan de Korte Wal een schoolgebouwtje gekomen voor de dagelijkse joodse les van de kinderen. In 1934 werd hun zoon Barend Salomo geboren en een dochtertje Naomi volgde in 1938. In het vooroorlogse Nederland had het Zionisme weinig opruk gemaakt. De meeste traditionele Joodse gezinnen waren anti-Zionistisch, vele anderen waren al behoorlijk geassimileerd. Ook in Borculo kon het Zionisme geen voeten aan aarde krijgen, maar er waren twee gezinnen die wel geinteresseeerd waren in een toekomst voor de Joden in Palestina. Dat waren Rachel en Hartog Noot en het oudere, kinderloze echtpaar David en Helena Colthof. Er ontstond een hechte vriendschap tussen deze beide gezinnen. David en Leen werden ook zo'n soort oom en tante voor de kinderen Noot. Toen de situatie van de Joden in Nederland in 1941 moeilijker werd, hebben Hartog en Rachel het oudere echtpaar Colfhof gevraagd voor hun kinderen te zorgen, mocht henzelf iets overkomen in de oorlog. Dit is helaas precies waar geworden: Hartog is bij de eerste grote Mauthausen razzia op Rosj Hasjana 1941 opgepakt. Zijn officiele overlijdensdatum staat drie weken later, in Kamp Mauthausen. De drie kinderen zijn ondergedoken geweest, ieder apart. Wat er precies met Rachel is gebeurd is niet bekend. Haar spoor houdt op in Auschwitz op 22 mei 1944. Het ziet ernaar uit dat zij, als jonge vrouw, nog gewerkt heeft in een van de Auschwitz werkkampen. Meteen na de bevrijding van Borculo in April 1945 zijn David en Helena Cothof de kinderen Noot gaan opsporen. Mau kwam opeens terecht in de vierde klas van de lagere school in Borculo. Er werd nergens over gepraat. Na de oorlog heeft de gemeente Borculo ter nagedachtenis een straat genoemd naar de chazzan. Hartog Nootlaan. Na studie in het Amsterdamse Rabbijnen seminarium heeft zoon Mau nog jarenlang Joodse les gegeven aan de weinige Joodse kinderen in de Gelderse Achterhoek.
