Het eerste lid van deze Germaanse naam vinden we in de stamnaam der (H)Erminones (zie Ermin- en vergelijk Erbout). Het tweede lid betekent 'linde, schild van lindehout' (zie -linde). De naam betekent dus ongeveer 'machtige strijdster met het schild'. Naam van een heilige uit de 6e eeuw, afkomstig uit Meldric (Meldert, Brabant). Bij haar graf liet Pippijn de Oude een nonnenklooster stichten; kerkelijke feestdag: 29 oktober. Vgl. de naam van de vrouw van Reinaert de Vos: Hermeline.
