Petrus Gerhardus was aanvankelijk kuiper; echter door de komst van zinken emmers en teilen (omstreeks 1875) verdween het kuipersvak. Met het blauwverven verdiende hij enige tijd 6 cent per uur. 's-Winters maakte hij soms maar 7 uur per dag. Op 21-jarige leeftijd ging hij in het bakkersvak en op 1 mei 1885 richtte hij in 'Het Heuksken' een bakkersbedrijf op dat later door zijn zoon en kleinzoon werd voortgezet.
