Max en zijn broer Gerrit,die boswachter was in Appelscha, bouwden schuilhutten in de bossen ten behoeve van piloten, joden, verzetsmensen en iedereen die om wat voor reden dan ook moest onderduiken.
In februari 1942 had Gerrit hier al piloten verstopt. Ze bivakkeerden in tenten alvorens ze verder werden geholpen richting het zuiden. Niet lang na Max zijn arrestatie was Gerrit genoodzaakt om op 19 april 1944 uit de bossen te vertrekken naar Steenwijk, waar hij K.P-leider werd. 
Zijn vrouw Brechtje Breeuwsma was zwanger toen de S.D. een inval in de boswachterswoning deed. Ze werd meegenomen in een open auto en reden met haar door de uitgestrekte omgeving van de boswachterij. Terwijl ze haar onder schot hielden, probeerden ze haar te dwingen de onderduikholen
aan te wijzen. Ondanks deze angstige situatie heeft ze niets verteld. Ook al werd Gerrit zwaar gezocht door de Gestapo, toch kleedde hij zich in een Duits uniform en ging op september zonder blikken of blozen op kraambezoek bij zijn vrouw en pasgeboren dochter Tineke in het ziekenhuis van Leeuwarden. Gerrit had wel meer van dergelijke sterke stukjes uitgehaald
