[Tortarolis, Jean François]
TORTAROLIS (Jean François), geb. te Cassale Senvase in N. Italië vermoedelijk omstreeks 1600, overl. te Leiden 6 Mei 1653. Zijn naam komt het eerst aldaar voor in 1622 als zijnde ‘dienaer in. de tafel’, m.a.w. bediende in den lommerd, want nog in dien tijd kwamen de houders der banken van leening veelal uit Lombardije. Hij woonde in bij de ordinaris tafelhoudster achter de Pieterskerk, waar thans de Bibliothèque wallonne gevestigd is. Na op 18 Januari 1627 het poorterrecht aldaar verkregen te hebben, wist hij zich in den loop der jaren omhoog te werken tot tafelhouder, waartoe hem bij besluit van 7 Nov. 1632 stedelijk octrooi verleend werd. Hij breidde voortdurend zijn zaken uit, kocht de bank te Leeuwarden en die te Breda en stierf als een gezien burger.
In 1624 was hij gehuwd met Barbara van Creenburch, dochter van Mathijs Hermansz., uit een gezeten leidsche familie, en van Aefgen Claesdr. Nachtegael, uit een bekend regeeringsgeslacht in Leiden. Hun kinderen waren Francesco, jong en ongeh. gest.; en de dochters Margaretha en Eva. De eerste, geb. 25 Dec. 1627, huwde 23 Sept. 1646 met Hendrik Sandra, koopman te Amsterdam, terwijl Eva, geb. omstr. 1630, op 19 Apr. 1656 de vrouw werd van Nicolaas Oudart (zie dl. Il, kol. 1041) van Mechelen, secretaris van de princesse royale en sedert 24 Dec. 1654 raad en rekenmeester van den Prins van Oranje.
