Karel Lücker: ontwerper en beeldhouwer van 13 staties

Bij de inzegening van het Kruiswegpark op 22 augustus 1920 waren behalve de drie beelden van de kruisigingsgroep op de Calvarieberg (statie 12) van de andere dertien staties alleen statie 1 en statie 6 klaar. De staties waren van de hand van beeldhouwer Karel Lücker. Hoe had hij deze opdracht gekregen in een tijd waarin de kleine stad Roermond méér dan 60 beeldhouwers telde en de concurrentiestrijd dus nogal groot moet zijn geweest?

Om een geschikte kunstenaar te vinden voor de levensgrote kruiswegstaties had rector Reiring in 1919 een prijsvraag uitgeschreven. Kunstenaars konden een ontwerp indienen. Vijf kunstenaars stuurden hun ontwerp in, niet onder eigen naam, maar ‘onder code’, waaronder de toen 37-jarige Karel Lücker. Hij was in aanraking gekomen met de expressieve beeldhouwkunst van de vroeg 20ste eeuw. Hierdoor had hij stijlopvattingen ontwikkeld die lijnrecht tegenover die van Cuypers stonden.

Dat Lücker toch de prijskamp won en de opdracht kreeg, hield een officiële erkenning in van zijn talent als beeldhouwer.

De uitvoering van de 13 staties betekende voor Karel Lücker een enorme klus, die vele jaren in beslag zou nemen. De laatste statie (statie 10) werd in de loop van 1928 geplaatst.
