Geboren 1 maart in Oud Vossemeer op het eiland Tholen. Ik heb Cees leren kennen als een grote lange man, de man van mijn zus die ik ook alleen kende van een foto. Zij was al de deur uit gegaan toen ik nog heel klein was. En is later getrouwd met Cees die in Zeeland woonde. Mijn ouders hebben schriftelijk toestemming moeten geven voor dit huwelijk. Ze zijn dan ook niet eerder thuis bij mijn ouders geweest, dan op het moment dat mijn ouders dertig jaar gehuwd waren. Ik werd op de lijnbus naar Emmen gezet, om ze op het station te verwelkomen, ik was toen negen jaar. Bij het station stond ik te wachten, ja op wie ik kende ze niet, dus maar afwachten. Opeens kwam er een heel grote man op mij toegelopen en vroeg ben jij Gerda, toen ik knikte zei hij ik ben Cees en dit is Sien je zus. Dit was dus de eerste kennismaking met mijn zwager. Daarna zijn ze wel vaker met vakantie geweest in Valthe geweest. Ook ben ik met mijn ouders een keer naar Zeeland geweest met de trein. Cees zijn ouders, broers en zusters woonden bijna allemaal in Oud Vossemeer. Cees kwam uit een groot gezin, hij vertelde dat hij wel eens slaag van zijn vader had gehad. (In zeeland was de gewoonte om te vertellen dat de baby’s uit de rode kool kwamen.) Cees had twee buurvrouwen afgeluisterd, die er over spraken dat er bij Barendse al weer een kleine op komst was.. Cees dacht nog meer monden om te vullen en er is al niet teveel. Weet je wat ik sla alle rode kolen stuk, dan komt er ook geen klein kindje meer bij. Cees werkte als bouwvakker in de bouw na de watersnood ramp van 1953. Hierna zijn ze verhuist naar Papendrecht. Cees zijn gezondheid was niet sterk, veel ziek, reuma, geelzucht, suikerziekte er bleef hem op dit gebied weinig bespaard. Maar hij was ook wel een erge snoepkous, hij hield zich ook niet erg aan zijn voorgeschreven dieet. Krentenbrood met suiker was een favoriete boterham. Jan en ik zijn vaak bij hen op vakantie geweest, in onze verlovingstijd hebben we samen met hen vele tochtjes met de auto in Zeeland en Brabant gemaakt. Nadat wij van Emmen naar Epse waren verhuist waren ze een paar dagen bij ons op bezoek, ze waren weg van de omgeving en zouden ook graag in deze omgeving willen wonen, vooral om de minder vochtige lucht. Jan heeft een advertentie in de krant laten plaatsen voor woningruil en zo zijn ze toen verhuist naar Brummen. Ze kwamen vaak zondags op de koffie, Cees was in die tijd veel ziek. Heeft ook nog in Harderwijk in een ziekenhuis gelegen voor een reuma operatie. Ook veel in het ziekenhuis in Zutphen waar hij in december 1974 is overgegaan. Zus Ina (Sien) is later verhuist naar Emmen, maar wil geen contact met ons. Ook op de begrafenis van Luc en Egbert was ze niet aanwezig. Ze woonde de laatste jaren van haar leven in Emmen.
