Notes about Egbert van Wessex

Egbert (ca. 770 - 839) was koning van Wessex (802-839) en van Kent, Essex, Sussex (825-839) en Mercia (829-839). Na het verval van de macht van Mercia onder Offa kreeg hij de titel ‘Bretwalda’, waarmee door de Angelsaksen een heerser werd aangeduid die macht had over andere heersers. Hij wordt gezien als de eerste koning van Engeland.
Als koning van Wessex was hij de opvolger van Beorhtric van Wessex. Als Bretwalda volgde hij Offa op. Over Egberts leven en regering is weinig met zekerheid bekend. Zijn vader was Ealhmund, koning van Kent. Egbert had een (half)zus, Alburga van Wilton.
In 815 overviel hij Cornwall, een gebied toebehorend aan de Welsh. Hij versloeg ook Beornwulf van Mercia, in 825. Na deze overwinning onderwierpen Kent, Surrey, Sussex en Essex zich aan zijn gezag. Ook east Anglia erkende hem als heer. In 829 veroverde hij Mercia en aanvaardde ook Northumbria zijn gezag.
Egbert trouwde met Redburga, een Frankische prinses (mogelijk een zuster van keizer Karel de Grote). Zij kregen twee zoons en een dochter; de Heilige Edith van Polesworth.
Egbert stierf in 839 en werd begraven in Winchester. Zijn zoon Ethelwulf volgde hem op.
