Tijdens de eerste jaren van hun huwelijk woonden zij in Oudenbosch en hadden zij Jans, MIJNTJE's zuster, bij hen in huis. Op 9 april 1908 verhuisden zij met hun drie kinderen naar Homburg aan de Saar in het toenmalige Pruissen (Duitsland). Daar wordt op 18 november 1910 nog een dochter geboren. Eind augustus 1911 keerde het gezin terug in Breda. Daar overleed MIJNTJE acht maanden later. De vier kinderen Knijff werden dus op jonge leeftijd wees en werden toen in een weeshuis geplaatst. Ze brachten de vakanties door bij hun oom Bernard den Braber en tante Mina van Steen. Na een paar jaar zijn de kinderen bij Jans, haar zuster in huis genomen.
