Na het overlijden, tussen 1826 en 1832, van haar man Tjerk verhuisde Hiltje in 1837 naar Amsterdam.
Volgens de bevolkingsregisters van Amsterdam (1851-1853) woonde zij met haar ongehuwde zoon Hilbrand, zeevarende (*1828), ongehuwde dochter Neeltje (=Eelkjen *1826) en ongehuwde dochter Keetje (=Knierke *1815) aan de Rozengracht, huis No 1 (Rijpenhofje) te Amsterdam. Dit was een huis voor arme mensen van de Doopsgezinde gemeente.
Door het overlijden van Tjerk had Hiltje geen inkomsten meer. Pensioen of uitkeringen waren er nog niet in die tijd, dus haar enige optie was een andere huwelijkspartner te vinden. Blijkbaar was dat niet gelukt en dus was ze overgeleverd aan de armenzorg die zij vond in Amsterdam bij de Doopsgezinde gemeente.
