Nieuwe Gorinchemsche Courant, 14/09/1893; p. 3/4: Een merkwaardige advertientie leest men in het Nws. Zij luidt aldus: "Geen recht voor een arme vrouw, want hoe is het mogelijk dat een man twee vrouwen mag hebben. Ik, Marie Merkelbach-Grein,ben zijn wettige vrouw, en gister schrijft hij dat zijn vrouw, Slagt, bevallen is van een dochter. Is dat recht in Nederland, misschien wel enig in Europa? Marie Merkelbach-Grein." De zaak is deze, dat ten verzoeke van zekeren Aart Merkelbach indertijd een echtschijdingsvonnis tegen bovengenoemde vrouw werd afgewezen. De arme vrouw, die bovenstaande advertentie plaatste, zocht recht, en vond het reeds in zoverre, dat dit vonnis werd vernietigd. Intusschen is de man met een andere vrouw gehuwd zodat hij er thans twee heeft. De man is van de vernietiging van zijn vonnis in hoger beroep gekomen; een beslissing is nog niet gevallen: vandaar de klacht dezer "arme vrouw".
