Hij is de oudst bekende stamvader. Hij zal rond 1475 geboren zijn. Hij verbleef te Maerbergen, een buurtschap zuidoostelijk van Wernhout gelegen onder de jurisdictie van Zundert. Verdere gegevens over Bertelmeus Vergroesen of over eventuele meerdere kinderen dan zijn zoon Jan ontbreken tot nog toe.
Notitie bij zijn zoon: Te Antwerpen werd op 25 januari 1538 Hendrick Bartholomeus van Groesen uit Groot-Zundert ingeburgerd. Hij was molenaar.
