    Met de aanleg van de Jordaan, begonnen in 1613, werd ook een kerk gebouwd. Deze Noorderkerk kwam gereed in 1622. Tussen de kerk en de Prinsengracht werd een kerkhof aangelegd terwijl de overige ruimte bestemd was voor het houden van de markt. Net als het Westerkerkhof werd ook dit kerkhof in 1655 te klein bevonden voor al de doden die men moest begraven. Omdat men tevens vreesde voor de lucht van het kerkhof werd het kerkhof verplaatst naar het bolwerk “Haarlem”.
