    Overleden op het Nederlandse brikschip "De Hoop", varend onder kapitein Visser, onderweg naar Berbice.

    De brik is een zeilschip. De brik kwam al in de 16e eeuw voor, maar werd vooral in de loop van de 18e eeuw als betrekkelijk klein, snelvarend oorlogsschip gebruikt, later ook als koopvaardijschip. Een brik heeft twee vierkantgetuigde masten, aangevuld met stagzeilen. Achter de grote mast bevindt zich een langsscheepszeil, het brikzeil. De brik moest snel bakzeil halen toen het stoomschip zijn intrede deed. De brik had moeite om in de wind te varen en had een relatief grote bemanning nodig voor een schip van eerder geringe omvang.

    Berbice was van 1666-1815 een Nederlandse kolonie in het huidige Guyana, waar veel doopsgezinden leefden. In 1815 overgedragen aan de Britten.
