    important thing to them to keep the memory of the original person alive in some way. It seems the name Mantel came from a small town in Bavaria close to Nurnberg. The crest (escutcheon) comes from
    the gable of the stadhuis there. There is a story that the first Mantels of Andijk came from Frankfurt am Main in Germany in the 1500Xs looking for a better life as things were bad there.
