Edwin William Smith could not read or write. When William Alexander Smith was shown his father's WWI military records in 2002, he wondered who had signed the attestation record and filled out teh forms because his father could not read or write. According to WA Smith, when Edwin returned from fighting overseas in WWI, and returned to his job at Cataract Power Company, he was fired when a co-worker informed the owners of the company that Edwin could not read or write. It was only after this event that he learned to write his name.
