Pieter Vet en Cornelia de Waard wonen vanaf in ieder geval 1969 tot aan hun dood in Sliedrecht op Burg. Drijberplein 35. Pieter is arbeider (1914) en rijswerker (1951). J. Dekker, een neef van Cornelia, plaatst na de dood van zijn tante een overlijdensadvertentie waarin hij schrijft: 'In dankbaarheid denken wij aan haar terug die altijd als een moeder hart en huis voor ons open had'.

Pieter en zijn oudere kinderen houden consequent vast aan de 'h' achter hun achternaam, ook in overlijdensaankondigingen en op grafstenen. In de Sliedrechtse familie Vet(h) is de 'h' soms wel en soms geen deel van de achternaam. Ik ga ervan uit dat dit slordigheid van de ambtenaar van de burgerlijke stand is, in combinatie met het feit dat mensen, doordat zij niet konden lezen en schrijven, zelf ook niet wisten hoe hun achternaam te spellen. Een meergehoord verhaal over het ontbreken van de h is dat vader dronken is bij de aangifte van de geboorte van zijn kind. In akten wordt door de mensen die wel kunnen schrijven afwisselend Vet en Veth geschreven. Het 'probleem' lost zich in de loop van de tijd op. Ik ken geen nu nog levende familieden die Vet heten, maar zich Veth noemen. Andersom kwam sowieso niet voor.
