Het Nationaal Archief in Den Haag bewaart het oorlogsdossier van Marinus Cornelis. In dat dossier zit onder andere een verklaring van Marinus Cornelis zelf. Hij verklaart in 1943/1944 bij de Landstorm Nederland in Den Bosch gediend te hebben. Hij zegt dit gedaan te hebben om uitzending naar Duitsland te ontlopen. Hij moest voor zijn gezin en zijn schoonouders zorgen: ‘Als ik naar Duitschland zou gaan, dan had het voor hen armoede geworden, want van geldzendingen naar huis kwam meestal niet veel terecht’. Marinus Cornelis duikt vanaf augustus 1944 3 maanden onder bij een vriend in Amstelveen en is de rest van de oorlog thuis in Den Haag. Marinus Cornelis duikt onder omdat hem wordt opgedragen onderduikers op te sporen: ‘Dit wilde ik niet, en ik heb de vlucht genomen’. Marinus Cornelis is op 22 mei 1945 gearresteerd. Een jaar later komt hij vrij en wordt hij onder toezicht gesteld van de Stichting Toezicht Politieke Delinquenten. Hij moet zich daar regelmatig melden. Het toezicht wordt in 1948 niet meer verlengd omdat Marinus Cornelis werk heeft gevonden (bij Sonja Papierhandel op Retiefstraat 5 in Den Haag). Het Nederlanderschap is Marinus Cornelis tussen 1946 en 1953 kwijt. Marinus Cornelis overlijdt in 1956 na 'een geduldig gedragen lijden, nog onverwacht'. Johanna Wilhelmina leeft op dat moment nog.
