Notes about Petrus Joannes Sarens



Schippers waren vaak van kindsbeen af vertrouwd met het varen. De schipper trok onder wisselende weersomstandigheden het hele land door, de ene keer zwaar bela- den, de andere keer met een leeg schip.
ln de negentiende eeuw ging het varen nog vaak op zeil. leder zuchtje wind moest worden benut. Bijlangdurige windstiltes werd soms urenlang geboomd. Vanaf het vaartuig werd door middelvan een lange stok of boom, met op het uiteinde een klauw, tegen de grond of oever geduwd en hierdoor kon men het vaartu i g voortbewegen. Een andere oplossing was het schip te laten trekken.
Als de schipper echter over voldoende midde- len beschikte, dan liet hij het schip trekken door paarden of muile- zels of huurde hij een scheepstrekker in. Maar een minder bemiddelde schipper moest zijn schip door vrouwen en kinderen laten voort- trekken.
Meestaltrokken paar- den de schepen die volgeladen stroomop- waarts gingen. Voor het leeg stroomafwaarts varen, was man- en vrouwkracht voldoende. Doordat voortdurend dieren of mensen langs de oever liepen om het schip te trekken, ontstond er een pad. Zo'npad wordt het jaagpad genoemd.
