Toonkunstkoor in kort bestek

Op 19 april 1829 werd de Maatschappij tot Bevordering van de Toonkunst te Amsterdam opgericht in het lokaal "Tecum Habita" te Amsterdam, in aanwezigheid van de volgende stedelijke afdelingen: Arnhem, Dordrecht, 's Gravenhage, Haarlem, Leeuwarden, Middelburg, Nijmegen, Rotterdam, Utrecht en Zwolle. Afgevaardigde voor Nijmegen was de heer P. Stadnitski.
Kwijnend bestaan
Na de oprichting van deze overkoepelende organisatie leden meerdere afdelingen een kwijnend bestaan, waaronder Arnhem en Nijmegen. Zo was de afdeling Nijmegen niet vertegenwoordigd op de algemene ledenvergadering die in 1832 te 's Gravenhage werd gehouden. Nijmegen had destijds circa 17.000 inwoners (tegenover 165.000 nu).
De Nijmeegse afdeling verdween geruisloos van het toneel.
Mannentekort
In 1894 vond de heroprichting plaats van de Nijmeegse Afdeling van de Maatschappij tot Bevordering van de Toonkunst, waaraan tegelijkertijd een muziekschool werd verbonden, met een eigen gebouw aan de Van Welderenstraat te Nijmegen. Hier werd naast les in de instrumentale muziek ook les gegeven in de vocale muziekbeoefening. Er waren zowel solozangklassen als koorzangklassen voor dames en heren. De eerste dirigent, tevens eerste directeur van de Muziekschool, was Albert Roothaan, die na enige jaren werd opgevolgd door Leon Bouman. Het huidige probleem van te weinig mannen t.o.v. de dames is niet nieuw en teisterde toen ook de zangkoren. Zo stonden er in 1901 bij Erato tien mannen tegen 97 dames.
Fusie
In 1862 werd in Nijmegen een zangvereniging opgericht¬â€  met de naam "Erato", muze van het minnedicht en de mimiek, onder de directie van H.de Vries. In 1905 was dat in handen gekomen van de heer J.A. Kwast, dirigent van de "Arnhemsche Orkestvereeniging" (AOV). Het aantal leden was teruggelopen tot 85. Mogelijk had deze terugloop te maken met de heroprichting van het Toonkunstkoor. In 1916 werd besloten tot een fusie tussen Erato en het Toonkunstkoor, o.l.v. L.C. Bouman.
Na het overlijden van laatstgenoemde kwam de leiding van "Toonkunst-Erato" in handen van Willem Kerper, die in 1945 overleed.
In 1945 werd Arnold Martens de nieuwe directeur van de Muziekschool en Co van Beinum, broer van de bekende dirigent Eduard van Beinum, dirigent van Toonkunst-Erato. In 1945 werd tevens het "Bachkoor" in Nijmegen opgericht, op initiatief van de heer Piet Versloot en Mevr. C. Vekemans-Teppema. Dirigent werd Piet Versloot.
In 1950 vertrekt Co van Beinum en wordt opgevolgd door Jan Out, dirigent van de A.O.V., waarvan de naam inmiddels was gewijzigd in "Het Gelders Orkest". Toonkunst-Erato had weer een hoog peil bereikt.
