Pieter Versloot (1833) was een gelovig man, die daarvan ook getuigde. Ze behoorden tot de Nederlands Hervormde Kerk. Als schipper vervoerde hij basaltstenen uit België voor de Zeeuwse dijken. Als er werklui aan boord vloekten, stuurde hij ze van zijn schip af. Hij zei, ik ben schipper naast God op mijn schip, hier wordt niet gevloekt. Daarop zei zijn vrouw, Piet ze doen je nog eens wat. Ze leefden later in Dordrecht op de Voorstraat 183 rood..in grote armoede van 1897 tot 1911. Hun kostwinner was hun zoon Rein, kleermaker. Hij werd ziek en overleed. Pieter Versloot stond bij de kist en sprak daar met de woorden van Job: De Here heeft gegeven, de Here heeft genomen, de naam des Heren zei geloofd! Geld voor de begrafenis was er niet. De overbuurman, een behoudende Rooms-Katholieke man zei, Versloot, die jongen krijgt een nette begrafenis. Pieter zei, daar heb ik geen geld voor. De buurman antwoordde: Je geeft hem een nette begrafenis en de rekening breng je bij mij. Zittend op zijn sterbed sprak hij de omstanders (wie?) aan; sprak de zegen uit en blies de laatste adem uit.
